Planning for the future
When you've cared for a loved one living with disabilities well into their adulthood, we know there’s an unbreakable bond. And it’s hard to imagine someone else providing their care. However, everyone needs to fly the nest at some stage, and caring into later life can present its own difficulties. Therefore it's good to know your options and put plans in place before you need them. With over 25 years’ experience in helping adults make the move from their family home, this is where Lifeways can offer support and guidance.

Support built around you
At Lifeways, we empower people to lead fulfilling, more independent lives. What that looks like for each person is completely different, and so we always take a personal approach, working together with families, support networks and individuals to make sure everything we do is tailored around them.
Whether your loved one would like to learn new skills, make new friends, spend time in their local community, or explore volunteering or employment - however big or small the goals, we’ll be by their side. We make sure family members feel fully involved in shaping the plans, and you can expect clear communication and regular reviews along the way.
“We had concerns, just as any parent would have with their child leaving home - even more so with a disabled daughter. But we were also filled with a lot of hope. It's been a really positive move.”
“I realised I needed to move on and out of my parent’s house. I like the fact that I can get out on my own and be more independent.”
A parent's perspective
“When Ross turned 37, my husband and I were in our 70s, and started to realise it might be time for him to leave home. It was becoming increasingly difficult to look after Ross, even with the support of a carer for a few hours a week. Eventually I plucked up the courage to contact a social worker who put me in contact with Lifeways. It was a hard conversation to have, but Launa (one of Lifeways’ Enquiry, Referral and Assessment Managers) helped us make up our minds that it was time.
We can’t thank Launa and the team enough. Ross is really enjoying his life here - he’s happier, has made friends, and loves his support team. Of course we miss Ross being at home, but we can visit him whenever we want, plus we have time to ourselves now to spend as a couple – so it really feels like we’ve got the best of both worlds.”
Great locations in the heart of local communities
With Lifeways, there’s plenty of choice when it comes to places to live, with houses, bungalows and apartments available in both our supported living and residential care locations. With shops, amenities, and transport links nearby, your loved one will benefit from being closely connected to their local community.
Each of our homes have their own feel, and so we’ll spend time showing you and your loved one around the ones we think could be the right fit, answer any questions, and give you the opportunity to meet our team and other people we support.
“It’s very nice here. Everyone’s so friendly. There’s helpful staff, and residents help with doing things. The garden is nice, I enjoy being outside working on the vegetable patch.”
“From the moment we first viewed our son’s new home, our whole family has been supported by the kind, friendly, welcoming and very professional staff.”
Support for a smooth move-in process
Making the move from the family home will be a big period of change in your loved one’s life. At Lifeways, it’s important to us that you, as a family, feel supported and comfortable throughout this time, and so we’ll be on hand to help make it as calm and smooth as possible.
We’ll make sure to keep you and your family up-to-date throughout the whole process, aim to keep disruptions to routines to a minimum, and offer you lots of friendly advice and support to help you feel informed and confident when it comes to making any decisions.
