Support worker Matthew Haslam from Leyland, Lancashire recently became the first member of the Lifeways team to complete the new Adult Care Worker level 2 Apprenticeship Standard.

The Apprenticeship Standards were introduced in 2017. The new qualification is of a higher quality and far more rigorous in relation to delivery and assessment. The Standards reinforce practical, work-based learning with technical and theoretical learning. The aim of the Apprenticeship Standards is to bridge the gap between knowledge and competence and includes an End Point Assessment (EPA) to examine what the learner has gained from completing the core learning which forms the basis of the qualification.

On 14th November he was presented with his certificate by our CEO, Justin Tydeman.

Matthew said:

“This was the first time that I have completed a vocational qualification as my previous experience has been in a college and university setting. It was really helpful to link what I was learning on the qualification into my everyday working practice. It is a really good way to learn while on the job. I have been supported well by my manager Stefanie and she gave me some good guidance when I needed it.

The main benefit of the qualification is that it gets you to think in a different way about your role and also helps you to develop as a person and to challenge yourself. It has helped me change how I support individuals with choice and decision making by adopting different communication styles to suit the people I support. I have reflected on my current practice and identified areas for further development.”

Stefanie Grant, Registered Manager at the service where Matthew works, said:

“The qualification has really helped him develop as a support worker, he has a better understanding of adult health care and the people we support. He is making good progress in his career as he has now stepped up as a team leader, and I am very proud of him. He is a great asset to the team and he is now eager to move on to complete the Lead Adult Care Worker level 3 Apprenticeship Standard which is brilliant to see.”

Nikita Jones, Regional Trainer for Lifetime Training, acted as Matthew’s assessor during his Apprenticeship Standard studies. She told us:

“Throughout the qualification Matthew was engaged in the sessions and completed his work to a fantastic standard. During the qualification I also observed on two separate occasions his competency delivering first class support. Matthew achieved a Merit which is a reflection of his commitment to the course and his engagement with me as his assessor.”
