The referral process for families
At Lifeways, we understand that starting the journey into supported living or residential care can feel overwhelming. For over 30 years, we’ve supported thousands of families, helping their loved ones move into the right home with a streamlined process.

While families can enquire at Lifeways regarding our services to start their journey early, they would need to have a Social Care assessment to get support funding for a placement. We do accept self-funding placements if the local council agrees to continue funding in the future. If your loved one doesn’t yet have a social worker, your first step is to contact your local authority’s adult social care team.
Once a professional has made a referral, we’ll guide you and your family through each step of the process, from the first assessment to moving in.
The referral process
- Step 1 – Social care assessment (timeframe varies - Your local authority)
- Step 2 – Initial response (within 24 hours – Lifeways)
- Step 3 – One-to-one assessment (within 12 working days – Lifeways)
- Step 4 – Visits and funding proposal (2 working days – Lifeways)
- Step 5 – Funding approval and move-in (timeframe varies – Your local authority)
How our process works
Step 1
When you contact us, we’ll collect some basic details and ask for any information already available from professionals (like a social care assessment).
Step 2
We’ll arrange a one-to-one meeting with your loved one and your family, either face-to-face or virtually. This helps us get to know them as an individual, from their needs and preferences to their ambitions for the future.
Step 3
If we think one of our services could be a good fit, we’ll arrange visits so your loved one can meet the team and see the environment for themselves. You’ll have the chance to ask questions and get a feel for the service.
Step 4
We’ll put together a funding proposal, outlining the level of support needed. This is then shared with the local authority for approval.
Step 5
Once the funding is approved, we’ll agree on a move-in date and support you through the transition. Our team will always be there to make the process as smooth as possible.
FAQs
Do we need a social worker?
Yes. Before starting the process with us, your loved one needs a social care assessment from your local authority. This is the first step in securing the right support and funding. You can find local adult social care services here. You can find out more about how to get a care needs assessment, if this is something you still have to do.
Can we visit the services before making a decision?
Absolutely - we encourage families to visit services, meet our teams, and ask questions. It’s important that your loved one feels comfortable and confident about their new home.
How does funding work?
Your local authority usually provides funding. The way this is calculated varies depending on the district where you live, but we’ll create a proposal to be reviewed by the council. In some cases, people can self-fund, but the local authority must still confirm they can take over funding in the future if needed. You can find out more in our guide to social funding.
Who can move into Lifeways services?
We support adults aged 18 and over with a wide range of needs, including learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities, acquired brain injuries, and mental health conditions.
Are your services safe for my loved one?
Lifeways services are regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and equivalent bodies in Scotland and Wales. Many of our services have achieved “Good” ratings. Quality and safety are at the heart of everything we do - find out more about our quality standards for further reassurance.
