Abdul wins award

Abdul Agbaje, who works at our Patey Court supported living service in Portsmouth, has been awarded the Portsmouth LD Services Carers Recognition Award due to the amazing work he has been carrying out with one of the people he supports over the past year.

The award is presented by the Portsmouth Learning Disabilities Partnership Board and can be nominated by any individual service user, family member, carer, professional or service manager. The Board ensures people with learning disabilities in Portsmouth are listened to, valued and supported to lead independent, active and satisfying lives. The award highlights excellence and rewards those who work tirelessly to provide consistently outstanding care.

Abdul originally joined Lifeways as an agency worker before becoming a permanent member of the support team. On his very first day Abdul met James, a person we support, who had just made a significant and challenging move from a previous placement where he had resided for 15 years.

Abdul quickly established a good relationship and understanding of James’s complex needs. His calm and supportive approach has been key in building up trust between the two, which in turn has had a really positive effect on James who is now more settled and able to cope much more positively with situations that previously he might have found difficult.

Abdul is now a central part of the core team, and helps with colleague inductions using role modelling and coaching as key elements in building up a strong support team.

Adrian Coles, Area Manager for the Poole and Portsmouth region said, “Abdul is extremely humble and has asked if his award can be left at reception to inspire other staff members”.

We’d like to add our congratulations, Abdul!
