Abbeymoor gateshead care home awards

A Lifeways residential service, Abbeymoor Neurological Centre, has been awarded a high commendation for Infection, Prevention and Control at the Care Home Awards 2021, which every year celebrates excellence and innovation across the UK’s care sector.

Located outside Gateshead, Newcastle-upon-Tyne, Abbeymoor supports up to 41 adults who live with acquired brain injuries and neurological disabilities.

At the Care Home Awards 2021, Abbeymoor was among 59 finalists from across the UK.  A panel of 20 judges decided the winners. Abbeymoor won a plaque commemorating the high commendation at the awards ceremony, which was held Friday 8 October, at Birmingham's National Conference Centre.

Louise Watson, Abbeymoor's Registered Manager (seen in the photos in the black dress) said: “I'm overjoyed that Abbeymoor's been awarded such an esteemed commendation. Our colleagues have shown resilience and extreme dedication throughout the entirety of the pandemic and for this to be acknowledged externally is just fabulous!”

Also present from Lifeways at the ceremony was Nicola Forshaw, Lifeways' Group Services Director (seen in the photos in the red jacket).

Why Abbeymoor won the high commendation:

In last year’s run-up to Christmas, Abbeymoor created a new way for family and friends to visit through the pandemic – a custom-built visitor pod that’s both see-through and COVID-secure.

Visiting family once more! An individual we support at Abbeymoor spends time with their sister through the windows on the custom-built visitor-pod.

Thankfully, Abbeymoor already had an area suitable for adapting as a visitor pod - an extension with French doors opening out to the service’s garden.

The visitor pod, which was built by Abbeymoor’s Maintenance Manager, Andy Thompson, took just three days of work, and cost less than £400.

This bright and welcoming space has proven popular with people who live at the service and their families and friends, and was particularly well-used over the Christmas period.
