Lifeways’ Health and Safety Team has been awarded the prestigious Team of the Year Award at the British Safety Council’s International Safety Awards 2024.

The team accepted the award on behalf of Autism Care UK, part of the Lifeways Group, at the 64th International Safety Awards Gala Dinner at the InterContinental London Park Lane Hotel.

Our Health and Safety Team competed against 38 other Health and Safety Teams from renowned organisations globally.

The award comes just one month after the Health and Safety Team, coupled with the Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) team, together won at the Safety & Health Excellence (SHE) Awards 2024.

‘Outstanding achievement’

Lifeways’ award-winning Health and Safety Team is made up of the Group Lead Head of Health & Safety, Heather Wright, and three Health and Safety Managers, Sophie McGrady, Alan Jones, and Sarah Stuart.

The British Safety Council’s certificate, awarded together with a commemorative glass trophy - seen in the image above - states that Heather Wright and the Health and Safety Team ‘have achieved the Team of the Year Award for their outstanding achievement resulting in significant improvement to health, safety or wellbeing in 2023.’

The Health and Safety Team led initiatives to promote and embed a culture of safety and excellence within the organisation. Their objective is to continually improve the safety and well-being of employees and the people they support, ensuring safety is an integral part of every process and action.

Tangible results

Using our electronic compliance system, Radar Healthcare, the team also introduced cutting-edge safety technologies, including real-time incident reporting.

This investment in e-compliance software has streamlined incident response times and led to a steady decline in accidents and incidents.

Since 2021, the team’s targeted interventions have led to a Lifeways-wide reduction of:

  •  over 48% in physical assault events,
  •  over 71% in burns and scalds,
  •  over 72% in slips, trips, and falls,
  •  and more than a 65% decrease in accidents and incidents reportable to insurers.

These improvements evidence Lifeways’ dedication to creating safer and more positive environments for everyone involved.

The Health and Safety Team have also held regular safety awareness campaigns, workshops, and monthly ‘Lunch and Learn’ sessions to ensure that employees are well-informed about the latest procedures and best practices.

‘Incredibly proud’

Gareth Roberts, Lifeways’ Director of Quality, said, “The recognition from the British Safety Council for the Lifeways Group Health and Safety Team is a fantastic achievement and truly deserved.”

“We are very proud to be selected Team of the Year when up against 38 well-known, reputable organisations.”

“Every team member in Autism Care UK and across the Lifeways Group has contributed to this award, the teams that provide exceptional care and support each and every day, the managers that ensure systems and processes are followed consistently, the wider support functions and of course the Health and Safety Team who are responsible for developing the policies, audits, and supporting documentation that help keep the people we support safe.

“This is truly a demonstration of living our value of being ‘One team’, and I am incredibly proud - but not surprised - that the team have been recognised.”
