laura and cameron

What began as some harmless virtual flirting on social media became a real-life love affair for a Nottinghamshire couple who have tied the knot thanks to Lifeways.

Romance blossomed for Cameron and Laura when they met four years ago through social media. So struck were they by each other, they soon started dating in real life.

After a couple of years they decided to take their relationship to the next level, first by living together at Cameron’s Lifeways home - then by taking the plunge and getting married.

Cameron, who is originally from South Africa, has ADHD, Autism and PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) and came to Lifeways three years ago where he moved into one of our supported living services in Nottingham.

Laura has Dyslexia, Dyspraxia and learning disabilities and was originally supported by Mencap (an organisation that supports people with learning disabilities) in West Bridgford.

The wedding was a joint effort by Cameron’s parents and Matthew Richardson, Team Leader at Lifeways. Staff at Mencap were also in constant communication to support Laura.

Cameron and Laura said: “We are so happy together and love each other so much. We are glad that we can be together as a married couple.”

Laura said: “I have never been so happy and have never met anyone like Cameron before. It is amazing to now be part of Lifeways with my husband. Thank you, Lifeways, for making it happen!”

Knowing the strength of the couple’s relationship, the Lifeways team worked with them, social workers and the local housing association to ensure Cameron and Laura could live together.

Tying the knot

Then on Saturday, 17 August 2024, at East Bridgford, the couple tied the knot in front of family, friends and Lifeways team members who work closely with Cameron and Laura.

Matthew said: “They had such an amazing day and were so happy. They both looked stunning.”

After they got hitched, the happy couple headed for Pembrokeshire, Wales, for their minimoon (honeymoon) with support from the Lifeways team who did their best to avoid becoming a ‘third wheel’!

The team organised a surprise romantic meal for them on the last night so they could spend some quality time together as a married couple.

Matthew added: ”It was two years of hard work to make this all possible, but we got there in the end and the result makes it all worth it. I am so proud of them both, they are truly amazing people.”
