Someone supported by Lifeways in Manchester climbs stairs at the service as he creates his new home

For 18-year-old Trevor, moving into his new Lifeways flat in Trafford marked the beginning of a significant personal transformation.

After a period spent in temporary accommodation in Denton, provided by the local authority, the move to a Lifeways supported living service offered Trevor the chance to establish a stable base and cultivate a sense of belonging.

“I like having my own space and making it my own,” said Trevor. “It’s a good area. I’m settled in.”

He has a network of support around him that he's not used to but is using the opportunity to make his own way in the world. Lifeways is all about helping people live as independently as possible, especially at the Stretford Road service which is specially designed for young people.

“I like to try to be as independent as possible so having support feels alien to me, but I'm getting used to it,” he said.

The support provided by Lifeways goes beyond simply offering a place to live. It’s about empowering individuals to develop essential life skills and actively shape their futures. For Trevor, this journey has involved a shift in perspective and a commitment to personal growth.

From transience to tenancy: creating a home

Initially, Trevor’s transition to his new flat was challenging as he has never really stayed anywhere long enough to call it "home".

“Trevor had always been on the move,” said Melonie Duffin, the service manager, who recounted how he arrived with minimal possessions, carrying everything he owned in bags.

This reluctance to invest in his living space sparked important conversations with Trevor about creating a long-term home.

“This is where you come to stay until you’re ready to go out into the community,” Melonie emphasised, highlighting the security and stability that a Lifeways supported living service provides.

With ongoing support, Trevor began to embrace the idea of making a home. He took on practical tasks such as building furniture, with guidance from Team Leader Matthew, and personalised his space with artwork and inspirational quotes.

“Trevor very quickly got the hang of what went where, and had a bedside unit built in no time,” Melonie said.

As well as putting his stamp on his new home, Trevor's also getting to know his neighbours. He’s already befriended Liam, who lives in the next flat and is of a similar age. Both share an interest in comedy and performance, more on that later!

Cultivating skills and celebrating talents

Lifeways’ support is designed to foster independence by helping people we support acquire a range of skills. Trevor is actively developing practical abilities, such as cooking and woodworking, while also exploring his creative talents.

“I can act, rap, sing, dance, you name it,” says Trevor.

He’s currently honing his skills in stand-up comedy and hopes to record in a music studio. Trevor’s support team is committed to helping him pursue these artistic goals. Together, they’re exploring opportunities for further development, such as college courses and links to a local studio.

“My talents could go somewhere,” Trevor said, revealing his ambition and drive. “Eventually I'd really like a family and a job - but I also know this may take time.”

Empowerment and participation

Beyond individual growth, Lifeways places strong emphasis on active participation and giving people a voice. Trevor is now involved in creating a newsletter and is set to become part of Lifeways’ Quality Checkers team.

The Quality Checkers are individuals supported by Lifeways who play a vital role in evaluating the services provided. Using a toolkit developed with the Quality Team, they assess the quality of support in their own homes and others’, ensuring it meets best practice standards.

This initiative empowers people to make meaningful contributions to the shape and direction of the support they receive.

Here’s to your future, Trevor!
