Making the move to supported living is an exciting time in your life, with new opportunities, new friendships and a new-found sense of independence. If it’s your first time moving into supported living accommodation, there can be a lot to think about and lots of decisions to make. We’ve put together this blog to help you find out a little more about supported living.

What is supported living?

Supported living is a service that allows people living with complex conditions to live in their own homes in the community whilst being supported to increase or maintain their level of independence. The amount of support provided in supported living will depend on the needs of each individual.

People living in supported living accommodation will have a tenancy agreement and be responsible for any bills, the cost of any furnishings and for the general upkeep of their home.

What is the difference between supported living and residential care?

Residential care is for people living with more complex needs who require 24/7 specialist care, while supported living is for people who can live independently but require support to complete daily tasks.

Why choose supported living?

One of the main benefits of opting for supported living is the freedom and independence it provides. You'll have your own space to relax and call home, but the reassurance of extra support if needed. As well as independence and freedom, you’ll be able to live with like-minded people while playing an active part in your local community. If you are moving out of your parent's home for the first time, from college or transitioning from child to adult services - choosing Lifeways supported living can be the perfect option.

Who can benefit from supported living?

Supported living is suitable for anyone with a complex condition and requires extra support. For example, people living with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, autism, acquired brain injuries may benefit. Similarly to residential care, supported living can provide 24/7 support. At Lifeways, we provide supported living services to many people with complex conditions, including Tom, a resident in our supported living accommodation.

How do I find a supported living service in my area?

Before finding a supported living service, you will need to have a needs assessment. This is a simple assessment completed by your social worker to identify your needs and the support you require. Once your social worker has completed your needs assessment, they will use it to determine whether supported living or residential care services are better suited for you. Once it has been decided which service is the best for you, they should inform you about any local services.

At Lifeways, we provide support for adults aged 18 and onwards–including people transitioning from children to adult services. Lifeways can support you through this process if needed, so please get in touch with us if you'd like any advice. If you would like to find a Lifeways supported living service, you can use our support search. Or, you can find supported living services near you by using the NHS supported living finder.
