John

When John arrived very suddenly at one of Lifeways’ residential service in Surrey, it wasn’t under easy circumstances. His previous home had closed, and a planned move fell through at the last moment. With no time to spare and no ID in place, he required an emergency placement to avoid being made homeless.

But what happened next shows exactly what makes our Lifeways team members so exceptional.

With almost no notice, the team came together to give John the warmest possible welcome. They immediately set to work preparing his bedroom, adding his favourite things, personal touches and familiar comforts, so that when he walked through the door, he could feel safe, valued, and at home.

This compassion and teamwork made all the difference.

John has a long history of complex support needs, and the team were told by his previous home that he struggled with certain environments, activities, and even particular people. But since being supported by Lifeways, he has flourished beyond anyone’s expectations.

A new start - and new experiences

John

Despite being told that John “didn’t like bowling,” “didn’t like women,” and had very limited interests, he has embraced a whole new range of activities with confidence and joy. In just a short time, he has:

  • Visited a Winter Wonderland and met Santa

  • Gone bowling

  • Enjoyed weekly trips to the local pub

  • Spent time cooking alongside female support workers - helping make jelly, cakes and more

  • Joined in with weekly indoor activities like circus evenings and Zumba dancing.

The change has been remarkable. With patience, structure, and a genuinely caring approach, the team helped John feel understood - and in return, he has shown just how much he is capable of.

A moment that truly mattered

One day, John asked: “I live here forever, don’t I?”

Those eight words reinforced that the service had truly become his home. And for Registered Manager Georgia Mankertz, it was a moment she will never forget:

“It gave me the determination to advocate on his behalf to facilitate a change from a temporary placement to a permanent placement, to keep him somewhere familiar and comfortable. It wasn’t easy, but after a lot of hard work from staff, management and advocates, we received the fantastic news that he is able to stay.

“We’re really excited about John’s future here.”

Looking ahead

In a short space of time, John has shown resilience, warmth, curiosity and a brilliant sense of fun. His journey so far is a reminder of what person‑centered support can achieve - and why Lifeways’ teams make such a powerful difference.
