When you walk through the doors of Beeton Grange today, light-soaked lounges and calming modern interiors are filled by the smiling faces of people who now feel truly at home.

Birmingham-based Beeton Grange, Lifeways’ 24-bedroom residential service for adults in need of specialist mental health recovery support, was built in the 1930s and had become rundown and grey.

But after a £500,000 investment, it has been transformed into a spacious, colourful and comfortable space – a place where people are in an even better position to rebuild their confidence, regain their independence, and work towards moving back into the community.

Sakinah McIntosh, the Registered Manager at Beeton Grange, and her team navigated the refurbishment with care.

“People we support here are really happy with their rooms,” said Sakinah. “Because they’ve been able to choose the colours for their bedrooms, and the colours for the communal areas.”

And choose they did. The palette now splashed across the walls of Beeton Grange is nothing if not expressive: mellow yellow, peach-pink, coke-bottle red - colours that speak less of design trends and more of personalisation, and pride.

Anthony, who lives at Beeton Grange, is delighted at his stylish baby-blue and ruby-red room. He picked the colours himself – and spent over £1,000 of his own money on the grey velour furniture.

“Feels great. It’s cleaner and tidier,” said Anthony. “And when your family come and visit you, you’ve got somewhere clean and tidy to show them.”

This video gives an insight into the transformation, courtesy of Igloo Property Group who carried out the work:

Another person we support, Sarah, took centre stage at the re-opening ceremony on 23 April, marking the occasion not with a speech, but with a rap she’d written:

“Beeton Grange, it’s where we’ve known... Love and joy and care, compassion and kindness always there.”

As a key part of the refurbishment, which was carried out by Igloo Property Group, outdated bedrooms were upgraded, en-suites were added, and tired communal areas were turned into welcoming, vibrant lounges.

Outside, a peaceful garden space now offers residents a place to relax and enjoy fresh air. The impact has been extraordinary.

Mark Spraggs, Managing Director of Lifeway’s Mental Health Division, said: “It was very dated and old-fashioned - it just didn’t support the mental health of the people living here in the way we wanted.

“We knew it needed a complete overhaul and I’m delighted to say the results have been incredible.”

Funded by Lifeways, the year-long makeover was far more than just a facelift. It’s transformed lives.

People who once stayed isolated in their bedrooms are now choosing to spend time in the communal areas. Mood and wellbeing have lifted, and behaviours that were once a concern have noticeably improved.

“It’s one of those things - you change the building, you change the mood,” said Mark. “Now we’re seeing people who used to withdraw from others joining in again, smiling, and genuinely feeling better. That’s what this investment was really about.”

At Beeton Grange, recovery is personal. Every individual has their own support plan, designed to help them develop skills, regain independence, and live as full a life as possible.

The environment plays a key role in that journey - and today, the service is better equipped than ever to help people thrive.
