A young man from Herefordshire, supported by Lifeways, is taking on the challenge of running 5k every day throughout October to raise money for Prostate Cancer UK.

Avid gamer and Chelsea fan, James, who lives at a Lifeways Mental Health service and suffers from schizophrenia, has already run more than 110km and raised over £100 for Prostate Cancer UK. Battling through leg pain, he remains determined to complete the challenge, with the Lifeways team cheering him on as he continues to clock up the miles before the end of October.

“I want people with schizophrenia to know that their life isn’t over. You can learn to manage it, keep moving forward and live your life without feeling like you can’t cope,” said James.

“My schizophrenia can be really difficult to live with. There have been times when I’ve spent days lying in my bedroom, just putting up with symptoms that I don’t want to live with. Running has become massive for me because it gives me something positive to focus on and helps take my mind off things. Knowing I’m doing it for a good cause makes it even more special.”

Over the past six months, James has made huge strides in taking back control of his life, with the Lifeways team by his side every step of the way. Now, as he pushes himself to run 5k every day, that support continues, with the team rallying behind him, spreading the word and sharing his fundraiser to help him make a difference for Prostate Cancer UK.

And this is just the beginning of James’ running journey. With his sights set on the Worcester Marathon next May, he has already signed up for his next challenge, with a member of the Lifeways team promising to run the half-marathon alongside him.

Service Manager Amber Preece added: “James is a real inspiration to everyone at our service. Through this challenge, he’s showing that a diagnosis doesn’t have to define you or stop you from living a fulfilling life. You can learn to live with your condition without letting it take over your life.

“The team has been doing everything we can to support James with his challenge and beyond, and it’s incredible to see how his determination is inspiring those around him, too. We’re all so proud of him. Keep going, James – you’ve got this!”
